About McNeese State University

Located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, McNeese State University was established in 1939 and was originally named Lake Charles Junior College. At that time, the school only offered associate’s degrees. The university began with just two buildings: Kaufman Hall, which used to be an administration building, and McNeese Arena. An auditorium was added in 1940 when the school changed its name to John McNeese Junior College in honor of Imperial Calcasieu Parish’s superintendent.

Ten years later, the college was granted accreditation as a bachelor’s degree conferring university under the new name of McNeese State College. In 1960, the university became authorized to offer courses that led to a master’s degree, and in 1966 offered its first Master’s degree. The school’s name changed officially to McNeese State University in 1970, and today McNeese State University offers programs through the Department of General and Basic Studies and six academic colleges: Engineering and Computer Science, Business, Liberal Arts, Education, Nursing and Health Professions, and Science and Agriculture.
