About the University of Miami

The University of Miami originated on April 8, 1925, when the Circuit Court for Dade County issued a charter to create a private institution for inter-American studies. In August 1926, the inaugural class of 372 arrived at the original 160-acre campus donated by George E. Merrick. Soon destroyed by a hurricane, the University of Miami was relocated to the Anastasia Hotel in September 1926. Bankrupt by 1931, it was reincorporated and built by President Bowman Foster Ashe during the late 1930s. In 1941, the Graduate School was founded for advanced education. In 1943, UM launched the Marine Laboratory that became the top-ranked Rosenstiel School. Until June 30, 1946, Miami participated in the V-12 Navy College Training Program for WWII. In 1961, the University of Miami was desegregated to enroll African Americans equally. In 1973, UM notably awarded the first athletic scholarship to a female student. On November 30, 2007, President Donna Shalala purchased Cedars Medical Center for its teaching hospital.

On March 6, 2019, the University of Miami proudly announced that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) approved its Quality Enhancement Plan to continue Level VI accreditation through the next Fall 2028 evaluation under President Julio Frenk, Ph.D., who earned the Clinton Global Citizen Award. Located 672 miles up Interstate 75 in Decatur, this esteemed 11-state Southeast Region accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). University of Miami Application Requirements

Admission to the University of Miami is classified as “very selective” by Peterson’s because only 11,020 of the 34,279 Fall 2018 applicants were triumphant for 32 percent acceptance. Post-grad Hurricanes must finish 120+ semester credits for a four-year bachelor’s degree at regionally accredited institutions. The Graduate School requires a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Entrance exams taken within five years of application are frequently mandated. Verbal and quantitative GRE scores must be 297 or better combined. Online Herbert Business School programs accept a median GMAT score of 640. Most admitted students fall into the GMAT range of 570-700. Test waivers are often available for individuals with GPAs above 3.50 or 5+ years of relevant work experience. The M.Ed. in Sports Administration Online allows waivers for three years of experience or active-duty military service. Online Master of Professional Accounting cohorts need prerequisite courses, such as Financial Statement Analysis and Statistics. International graduates also need at least 550 TOEFL pBT, 80 TOEFL iBT, or 6.5 IELTS scores.

The University of Miami has final deadlines of August 12th for Fall, December 16th for Spring, and April 15th for Summer starts online. Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2019-20, the University of Miami is charging traditional full-time Graduate School students $18,900 per semester or $37,800 annually. Mandatory post-grad fees are $554 by term or $1,108 each year. Miami then budgets $7,090 for rent, $3,099 for meals, $927 for books, $858 for personal expenses, and $579 for travel each semester. Total post-grad attendance averages $33,470 by term and $66,940 every year. Fortunately, UOnline programs are usually cheaper at $2,100 per credit. The Online MPA bills a two-year total of $75,600. Online M.Ed. in Applied Learning Sciences cohorts spend $63,000 overall. The M.S. in Finance Online has a 32-credit price of $67,200. Online M.S. in Health Informatics students can expect paying $69,300 over 22 months. The Herbert MBA costs online learners the most at $88,200.

According to the NCES College Navigator, the Office of Student Financial Assistance on the University Center’s 2nd Floor links 72 percent of new full-time Miami Hurricanes to tuition aid averaging $21,766 each for $32.52 million combined. Graduate School funds include the Double Cane Scholarship, Spirit of Miami Scholarship, Ibis Scholarship for Entrepreneurship, Bruce McLaughlin & Cynthia Swol Scholarship, Julia Tuttle Scholarship, Business Innovation & Technology Scholarship, Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship, Cobb Fellowship, McKnight Fellow Travel Scholarship, Maytag Fellowship, Wulkan Family Scholarship, Sam & Clara Schreiber Scholarship, and Florida First Scholarship. The Dean’s Fellowship gifts $35,000 annually to three graduate students with minimum 3.5 GPAs who apply before February 15th. Since 1967, the Miami Foundation has awarded $350 million total through programs like the Judge Sidney Aronovitz Memorial Scholarship and Alan Epstein Reach for the Stars Scholarship. Federal resources, such as the Graduate Plus and Direct Unsubsidized loans, are also available with FAFSA forms coded 001536.
