About Colorado State University

The Agricultural College of Colorado was established in 1870 under the Morrill Act. Robert Dazell and the Larimer County Land Improvement Company donated land for the school one year later and the state appropriated $1,000 for construction with a requirement that the school raises matching funds. Grange No. 6 held a fundraising event on the corner of College Avenue and West Laurel Streets in 1874, successfully raising the matching funds necessary and construction began a few months later.

The State Board of Agriculture took control of the school after Colorado gained statehood. Additional funding was provided from a railroad right-of-way through campus and a mill levy. The Agricultural College opened officially in 1879, initially acting more as a preparatory school than a college due to lack of education in the rural area In 1935, the school was renamed the Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.

Today, Colorado State University has an enrollment of approximately 23,700 undergraduate and almost 4,000 graduate students.
