About Salve Regina University
Salve Regina University is a private university commonly called Salve. The Sisters of Mercy came to Newport, Rhode Island in the early 20th century and established the university in 1934. Called Salve Regina College, the name came from a Latin term that means Hail Queen. After receiving a donation of a former mansion in the late 1940s, the college used it to create classroom spaces and dorm rooms for students. It received other donations from locals who wanted to see the women’s college succeed. More changes came in the later years as the college became coeducational and added graduate programs to its curriculum. U.S. News and World Report ranked Salve as the 23rd best college in the region in 2020. Architectural Digest included the university on its ranking of the most beautiful campuses in the country too. Through the Sisters of Mercy, the university remains affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.
Salve Regina University Accreditation Details
Salve has regional accreditation, which lets graduate students bring credits from other graduate schools with them. This accreditation comes from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and helps students get financial aid each year. Not only can they get federal aid, but they may qualify for university and state aid when they use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Salve also has accreditation for nursing, design, business, social work, and counselor degree programs.
Salve Regina University Application Requirements
Graduate students have one year from the time they start the university’s application to complete it. This gives them time to gather their documents and make sure that they meet all requirements. Students need a bachelor’s degree from any college or university that has regional accreditation. They can show their degrees and prove that they took any prerequisites through the college transcripts that they submit. Salve has a deadline of May first for some programs and June first for others. A few programs do not have an application deadline but still recommend that students apply a few months before students plan to start at the university.
One of the main application requirements is a personal statement. Students need to create a concise statement that tells Salve why they picked the university and a specific degree program, the knowledge and experience they have of/in the area and what they want to do when they finish the program. They also need to provide a resume that lists their full experiences and two letters of recommendation. Students can submit letters written by academic references from their former college and from any employers or supervisors who are familiar with their professional skills and work.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Most of the graduate programs at Salve charge $605 per credit hour. In the university’s MFA programs, students pay $20,040 in tuition every year. Students pay a $250 fee when they take the comprehensive exam that most programs offer, which determines whether they made progress and deserve to remain in the program. A similar fee is due when students take a final exam to get their degrees. Online students are responsible for paying any of the fees and costs associated with their living expenses, including the computers they use in their classes and their room and board.
Unsubsidized loans help students pay most or all of the costs of attending Salvage. They can only get those loans if they complete the FAFSA, which will also let them qualify for PLUS loans. While PLUS loans only go to those with a good credit history, unsubsidized loans go to all types of graduate students. Some private lenders offer loans for graduate students too. The FAFSA can also help the university find special grants and jobs for graduate students too. Online students may have the option of working for companies near where they live. Loans and jobs are two of the more common types of aid awarded to students in the online Master’s degree programs available at Salve Regina University.
