About Eastern New Mexico University

Established in 1927, Eastern New Mexico University is part of the state’s university system and is located in Roosevelt County. The school is the youngest college in the New Mexico University system. The campus is located in a suburban area and covers 344 acres at its main campus The school was initially chartered as a college to train teachers in the late 1920s, but the stock market crash in 1929 made it difficult for officials to fund the opening of the school, so the university’s doors didn’t open until 1934.

First known as Eastern New Mexico Junior College, the school operated as a community college until 1940 when the school’s degree offerings were expanded to include bachelor’s degrees. The university also has a branch campus in Ruidoso, which offers two-year degrees for students who can move onto the main branch of the university after completing work at the community college location. An additional two-year branch is located in Roswell, which was established in 1958 and eventually located on a former air force base. Non-residents will pay $282.41 per credit hour, as well as the $17 online fee when they enroll in one to six credit hours or $374.36 per credit hour if they enroll in at least seven credit hours.
