The University of Lincoln has many agriculture programs, which is to be expected from a school in a state whose economy is largely agricultural. The unexpected is the emphasis on liberal arts and sciences. One of the goals, when UNL was founded, was to afford the people of Nebraska a good liberal arts foundation, and that tradition continues today. Graduate students have more than 100 programs from which to choose. The Master of Applied Science degree is a 36-credit-hour program that is intended for students who want a professional degree in agriculture, food or natural resources. The degree is flexible, and students can personalize it to meet their career goals. Of the 36 hours, 18 must be in the concentration and nine must be in a secondary, or supporting, area of emphasis. There are two areas of specialization: Community Development or Science for Education. Both of these programs culminate in a three-to-six-hour project instead of a thesis.

The MBA at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln is a 48-credit-hour program that emphasizes management, leadership and teamwork and case analysis. Students can be specialized in International Business, Business Analytics, Marketing, Supply Chain Management or Finance. The Financial Times has ranked this program as the 13th best online MBA program.

The Master of Arts in Critical Thinking can be earned in one of seven concentrations. These are Writing and Critical Reflection, Organizational Science and Leadership, International Migration Development and Citizenship, Cultural and Global Analysis, Health and the Environment or Ethics and Values. This unique degree serves to foster creative thinking and ingenuity, not unlike the “think-tank” concept.

The program requires 30 credit hours, 12 of which must be in a primary concentration and 12 from electives. The interdisciplinary degree requires students to take the course “Introduction to Critical and Creative Thinking” in addition to other coursework and a graduate project.

There are a plethora of education-related master’s programs including 11 in Curriculum and Instruction alone. The Master of Science in Special Education, Behavior Intervention is a 36-credit-hour program that prepares students to work with high incidence ( such as autism spectrum disorders) and low incidence ( like children with extreme delays) behaviors. Sample courses are High Incidence Disabilities, Research Methods in Special Education, Characteristics of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders and Behavior Modification.

The Master of Science in Emergency Preparedness also requires students to complete 36 hours of study. It addresses the areas of natural disasters, terrorism, and infectious disease. The program focuses on imparting skills such as leadership, communication and information management. It builds on four core courses based on the area of emphasis. This degree program requires a thesis.

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) is a program that gives students a foundation and experiential knowledge in writing fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, young adult literature, playwriting, and screenwriting. The university assigns a mentor to students in this program each semester. IN addition to the online coursework, the MFA at the University of Nebraska Lincoln requires two periods of residency at the campus.

This school was founded as a land grant institution in 1869. It is Nebraska’s oldest university. Its focus has always been vigorous research in agriculture, but its founders also sought to give students in Nebraska a broad liberal arts education.

The University of Nebraska at Lincoln Application Requirements

First-year freshmen should apply online. They must arrange for their high school to submit an official copy of their transcript. Additionally, the agency administering the SAT or the ACT must send those official results to the university. There is a non-refundable $45 application fee.

Freshman applicants must also complete a 500-word personal essay focusing on leadership to be considered for the leadership scholarship offered by the school, and submit a letter of recommendation.

Graduate students apply only online. There is a $50 non-refundable application fee. Students create an account in the GAMES ( Graduate Admission Management and Evaluation System) portal and access information for requisites of the department housing their degree programs. Documents required vary by degree program and department.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Cost-of-Attendance for freshmen at UNL is estimated as $24, 936 per year. That includes $7,350 in tuition, #1,896 in other fees, $1,016 in books and supplies, $11,430 in room and board costs and other expenses.

Graduate and online courses are billed by credit hour and vary by program. For instance, the Master of Science in Critical and Creative Thinking costs $365 per credit hour, while the MBA is $630 per credit hour. Graduate and online students also are assessed some fees.

Most students need assistance in managing their student debt. The first step is always to complete the FAFSA form. This federal program awards grants, subsidized and unsubsidized loans and opportunities for work-study participation based on income, but it also provides information the university uses to qualify students for school financial aid.

In addition to federal assistance, there are state grants and scholarships as well as tuition-repayment programs. Some of these opportunities are funded by the legislature, and some are provided through private individuals and administered by the state.
