About Indiana Wesleyan University
Indiana Wesleyan University is a large private university based out of Indiana. Established in 1920, it previously operated as the Marion Normal College and the Marion Normal Institute. Located in Indianapolis, it served as one of the primary training schools for teachers in central Indiana. Its graduates finished certificate programs in two to four years and later went to work in schools in the Midwest and other parts of the country. The success of those programs led to the institute becoming a full college and building a large campus in Marion. Indiana Wesleyan University has an affiliation with the Wesleyan Church and ranks as the state’s oldest private university.
Also called IWU, it offers both traditional programs and programs designed for those who have more experience. Adults who need to finish a bachelor’s degree can complete their degrees through the university, but IWU will also accept students who have a bachelor’s degree and a few years of experience or more. When U.S. News and World Report ranked the best colleges in the Midwest, it listed IWU at number 28 on that list. It also ranked the university on a list of colleges with the best prices. Thanks to its regional campuses and online programs, IWU now has an enrollment of more than 4,500 graduate students.
Indiana Wesleyan University Accreditation Details
The accreditation that IWU has lets students know that the time and money they spend working on their degrees are worth it. This includes the regional accreditation it has from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the specialty accreditation it has for some of its degree programs. Examples of its specialty accreditation include those from the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Indiana Wesleyan University Application Requirements
Though IWU welcomes students and adult learners of all types to apply, its graduate programs have some specific requirements that those students must meet. They must have a bachelor’s degree from a university/college that either has regional accreditation or accreditation from the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) and a cumulative undergrad grade point average of at least 3.0. Students will submit official or unofficial transcripts to show that they maintained this GPA. Those who submit unofficial transcripts will need to submit official transcripts before they take any classes from the university. Some programs such as the counseling programs require that students take a minimum of six credit hours of psychology classes while in an undergrad program too.
Most programs ask for a GRE score and require that students take this test in the recent past. They cannot submit scores that are older than five years ago. A writing sample is another requirement because the program wants to ensure that the student can handle the research and writing needed at the graduate level. Letters of recommendation from their former professors and professional references are also required. Students may need to interview with a faculty member of the department too. IWU also requires prospective online graduate students to complete its application.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The graduate counseling programs available online from IWU and most of its other online programs charge a rate of $546 per credit hour, which includes fees. Students can earn a clinical mental health degree online for a total of $26,208. This amount does not include any expenses that students have such as software needed in their classes or their textbooks. The university estimates that graduate students will pay around $500 a semester for books and other supplies.
Students should check with the department to find out about any financial aid available to specific majors. Counseling majors may qualify for a scholarship that awards them $500 a semester. They only need to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25 and take at least nine credits of classes each semester to get this scholarship in the future. Students in the counseling program and other programs may receive a scholarship of $1,000 each semester based on their grades and status too. With the FAFSA, online graduate students can apply for unsubsidized student loans and for PLUS loans each year. There are private lenders who loan graduate students too. Indiana Wesleyan University designs financial aid packages and notifies students in all of its online graduate programs of their aid at least a few weeks before the start of the semester.
