The New School Graduate & Online Degrees

The New School is a unique institution that has been at the forefront of international and social research and counts faculty members with professional connections to industries like writing, art, politics, and music. Students may complete several degrees online at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as pursue some certificate programs online. The online programs are available for completion entirely online, or students can attend some classes online and some classes on campus.
For graduate degrees online, students may earn a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, a Master of Science in Strategic Design and Management, or a Master of Science in Media Studies. The university also has a global executive program for its strategic design and management program. Other degrees include a Master of Science in Media Management and an MPS in Fashion Management.
For the university’s graduate programs, students may often choose between a thesis or a non-thesis curriculum. For example, the Master of Arts in Media Studies may be completed in 39 credits with a thesis or a without a thesis. Classes students will take include Media Theory, Media Design, Digital Video Production, Web Design, and Children & Media.
Applicants who choose the Master of Science in Strategic Design and Management will need to complete a total of 36 credits, as well as maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Classes required in the program include Strategic Design and Management in New Economies, Managing Creative Projects and Teams, and Sustainable Business Models. Other classes include New Design Firms, and Design Innovation and Leadership.
For the Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, the university suggests that 93 percent of its graduates are able to find work within a year of graduation or are eligible to enter doctoral programs in education. More than 60 percent of students in the TESOL program receive merit-based institutional funding. Classes in the program include English in the World, Principles of Language Learning and Teaching, and Language Analysis for Teachers.
The New School also offers its graduate and professional students many certificate options on topics like business design for social impact, user-centered design, web design and development, and digital marketing. Students can also earn certificates in infographics and data visualization, human-centered healthcare, design leadership for business, and fashion business.
About The New School
The New School was established in 1919 as The New School for Social Research. The school arranges its programs within five divisions and has more than 10,000 students enrolled. Divisions include the Parsons School of Design, The New School for Social Research, and the College of Performing Arts. More than 10,000 students attend the university, and more than 6,800 students are enrolled at the undergraduate level.
The school’s motto is “To the Living Spirit,” and the school is officially a private research institution. The official colors of the university are white, black, and Parsons red and students can participate in unaffiliated sports teams who play in NCAA Division III games. The teams are nicknamed the Narwals, and they play alongside a mascot named Gnarls the Narwhal.
The New School Accreditation Details
The New School is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which is the agency that approves schools throughout New York and neighboring states. Accreditation from the commission applies to the institution as a whole. The university has a location in Parsons, Paris, which is also accredited and is approved by the French Ministry of Education for operations.
Other programs with accreditation include the graduate program in architecture, which is accredited by the National Architectural Accreditation Board, and the doctoral program in clinical psychology, which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. The graduate degree in public and urban policy has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.
The New School Application Requirements
Each of the divisions within The New School has a separate application procedure in addition to the basic application requirements of the overall university. When submitting documents to the university, applicants will complete an application for the student’s intended school or use the Common Application. Students interested in the AAS degree or any of the adult bachelor’s programs should use the official application hosted by the university.
Students may be approved for an application waiver if they are a veteran, a recipient of a listed fellowship, or meet the qualifications listed in the Common Application. Application materials beyond the official application include official transcripts, an essay, letters of recommendation, and standardized test results. International students may need to submit results from an English language test.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of tuition for undergraduate students at The New School varies from $1,170 to $1,700 per credit. For example, dance degree students will pay $1,700 per credit, which is $24,380 per term for full-time enrollment of 12 to 21 credits. Students who enroll in fewer than 12 credits will pay a per-credit rate. Some students may need to pay additional fees for certain programs. For example, the BPATS Prior Learning Evaluation is $600.
For graduate students, the per-credit tuition rate depends on the program and the location where the student takes classes. The Parsons, Paris location is $19,940 for tuition, and the university expects that students will enroll in 12 to 19 credits. For the Master of Arts in Art Management and Entrepreneurship, the cost for full-time tuition is $23,765, and the cost for the Professional Studies Diploma is $16,845.
More than 83 percent of students who attend The New School receive financial aid. More than 2,000 students at the university have work-study grants. All applicants are considered for academic scholarships based on merit and artistic ability, and no additional application is required for consideration. Students are automatically evaluated for scholarships when they submit their standardized test scores.
The university recommends that students apply to outside scholarship organizations to help further reduce the cost of attending. Undergraduate students who attend may qualify for need-based grants through the U.S. Department of Education. Receiving a federal grant requires the submission of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Grants offered to students at The New School may include the Pell Grant or the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant.
