We searched the web and used College Navigator to find ten fields where online degrees were standard, focusing on schools that offered programs taking less than two years. We considered the best schools to be those with a hands-on curriculum, highly educated faculty, regional accreditation, rigorous curriculum, and the opportunity for students to earn certifications or credentials either during or after graduation. We looked at several variables to create our ranking including a minimum amount of time to degree completion (full-time status in most cases), student to faculty ratio, average graduate tuition rates as published by College Navigator. Since each field is drastically different, we developed a standardized ranking system using these variables. Where there are ties, the school with the lower average graduate tuition rate is favored in the ranking.

Student/Faculty ratio:

  • 13:1 or less- 3 points
  • 14:1 to 20:1- 2 points
  • 21:1 and above- 1 point

Average Graduate Tuition Rate:

  • Less than $8,000- 5 points
  • $8,000 to $18,000- 3 points
  • Greater than $18,000- 1 point

Minimum Time to Completion:

  • 12 months or less- 5 points
