About Chapman University

Chapman University is a private university affiliated with the Disciples of Christ and the Christian Church. Established in 1861, the university opened with a campus in Woodland, California called Hesperian College. This college offered an admissions policy that accepted all students, which made it a unique campus. California Christian College later acquired the campus and began offering classes in Los Angeles. After becoming Chapman College in the early 1930s, it moved to Orange and took over the campus of Orange High School, eventually becoming Chapman University. The university now offers programs through 11 schools and colleges, including schools that specialize in filmmaking and the performing arts. Chapman ranks as one of the top universities in the nation on the lists issued by Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, Washington Monthly and ARWU. The university has an enrollment of more than 8,000 students.

Chapman University Accreditation Details

Chapman has regional accreditation from the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities (ACSCU) through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Students can use this accreditation to access the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to get a financial aid package that includes federal loans and other options. The university’s teaching, business, marriage and family therapy, music, dance, and psychology programs are some of the tracks offered by Chapman that also have accreditation.

Chapman University Application Requirements

Most of the graduate programs at Chapman accept students for the fall and the spring. The university has a fall application deadline of February first and a November first deadline for the spring. Students must send in transcripts from each school they attended where they earned any undergraduate or graduate credits. An official GRE score is also required, but Chapman will accept any score from students with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Students with a GPA of 2.5 to 2.99 need to score 145 on the quantitative section of the exam, 150 on the verbal section and 4.0 on the writing portion.

Chapman asks for a 500-word essay in which students discuss their reasons for selecting the university and why they want to study a specific program. They’ll also need to provide a writing sample of around 1,200 words that they created for a former class. The university also requires a resume and two letters of recommendation. Students applying to any of the university’s accelerated programs cannot apply until they reach their junior years. Those students only need to provide a resume, transcripts, a writing sample, and an essay.

Tuition and Financial Aid

At Chapman, graduate students pay the rate set by their degree programs. The business and economics programs charge between $1,520 and $1,790 per credit hour. Education majors pay $1,025 per credit hour. The costs that students pay will also depend on whether they need to do any lab work in their classes. Chapman offers a discounted rate for graduate students taking classes through its regional campus. Students also pay $650 to $700 for their loan fees every semester.

Financial aid can help students pay for the university’s graduate programs. Most of these students qualify for federal unsubsidized loans, which interest applies to every year. Students can borrow a maximum of $20,500 for each year they spend in a graduate program, but the government will limit the total amount they can borrow, including any loans they took out in their undergraduate years. Private and alternative loans are also available, which can help students cover the costs that their federal loans do not. They can look into alternative funding and work with the university to find jobs in their areas. Chapman University offers financial aid for all graduate students in its traditional and online master’s degree programs.
