About University of Washington
Only a few years after the Oregon and Seattle territories were separated to form the State of Washington, the University of Washington was founded. The school officially opened in 1861 as the Territorial University of Washington. Financial difficulties plagued the school for the first few years due to low enrollment and a lack of funding, but the doors remained open.
In 1867, Clara Antoinetter McCarty Wilt received their first degree from the school, earning a bachelor’s degree in science. During both world wars, military troops were housed on campus, allowing the University to grow in other areas including liberal arts studies and a medical school. After World War II, enrollment grew quickly as soldiers returned from war to take advantage of the GI Bill. From 1958 to 1973, enrollment more than doubled.
Today, the University of Washington is ranked in the top 20 Academic Ranking of World Universities. There are three campuses located in Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell. The school also has a world-class academic medical center and offers a wide range of online programs.
