About the University of Maryland-College Park
The University of Maryland-College Park was first established in 1856. The institution welcomed its first 34 students and introduced them to courses in engineering and liberal arts. In order to expand, the university invited women and minorities. After surviving the Great Fire in 1912, UMD considered itself a public college. By 1917, UMD added more schools such as the school of agriculture, engineering, chemistry, and graduate school. In 1919, the University of Maryland-College Park conferred a bachelor’s degree to the first woman graduate. A year later in 1920, the university had 522 students with 22 of them being women. That same year, UMD awarded its first Ph.D. degree. Following this success, UMD established its student newspaper which was called The Diamondback. The University of Maryland-College Park officially received accreditation in 1925.
In 1938 UMD established the Robert H. Smith School of Business and in 1948 the Phillip Merrill College of Journalism was created. UMD continued to expand and make its way out of history, and in 2007 the School of Public Health, which was previously regarded as the College of Physical Education, Recreation and Health was established. In 2008, the John S. and James L. Knight Hall officially opened and is now home to the College of Journalism. UMD is ranked 22nd for “top public national university” by the U.S. News & World Report and 8th for “in-state students” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.

The University of Maryland-College Park Application Requirements
First-year graduate students seeking admissions should preview the admissions requirements checklists for specific departments as each program has its own unique suggestions. A basic list of documents includes a statement of purpose, official transcripts, letters of recommendation, a CV/Resume (this is optional for some programs), satisfactory GRE scores, and a $75 application fee. Students who are preparing to participate via virtual classrooms should still follow the same application process. Applications can be completed online.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Graduate students who are residents of the state of Maryland can expect tuition of $731 per credit hour or $8,772 per 12 credit hours. Graduates who are non-residents of the state can expect tuition of $1,625 per credit hour or $19,500 per 12 credit hours. Fees can range from $451 to $817.50. Students will also have to pay other miscellaneous fees for things such as athletics, technology, auxiliary, student union, and the shuttle bus. Other fees include those for recreation and student activities. In total, students who are taking more than nine credit hours can expect student fees of $817.50 and students who are taking eight credit hours or less can expect fees of $451. Students who are primarily taking courses online will not have to cover the same grouping of fees as students who reside on campus and take in-person courses.
