About Rutgers University

In 1766, Queen’s College, named in honor of the Queen-Consort of King George III, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, was chartered with the goal of educating youth in language, liberal arts, divinity as well as arts and sciences. The school was located in New Brunswick rather than Hackensack as the Anglican population provided stronger support for the school. Ironically, the first classes at the religious school were held at the Red Lion Tavern and were held there until the American Revolution. Classes were moved as the British felt rebel activity took place in taverns so the school moved into private homes.

Funding was a problem in the early years and, in 1793, the trustees proposed a merger with the College of New Jersey. The measure failed by one vote and Queen’s College closed in 1795 until the trustees raised $12,000 and reopened in 1808. Unfortunately, funding continued to be a problem and the school closed again in 1812. When it reopened in 1812, it was renamed in honor of Colonel Henry Rutgers, a Revolutionary War Hero who was known for his philanthropy and who donated funds to the school after its dedication in his honor.

Rutgers became New Jersey’s land-grant institution in 1864, selected over Princeton. In 1918, the New Jersey College for Women was established. In 1945 and 1956, acts passed the state legislature making Rutgers the State University of New Jersey and creating a public institution. The University of Newark merged with Rutgers in 1946 and the College of South Jersey in 1950.

Today, almost 69,000 students attend Rutgers. It is the largest and most comprehensive institute of higher education in New Jersey.
