About Webster University

A private, non-profit university, Webster University was established in 1915 by the Sisters of Loretto. They named it Loretto College, which was an institution for Catholic women. The school had only five students, but that number has grown to 17,000 today.

Renamed as Webster College in 1925, the institution distinguished itself by offering education to French refugees during WWI and obtaining accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1925. Webster continued its support of U.S. troops through WWII with special programs for veterans and broke barriers by admitting vision-impaired and African-American students.

Male students were finally admitted full time to Webster in 1963, and the decade was marked by ground-breaking educational techniques and the fight against segregation. The Sisters of Loretto transferred the university to a Board of Directors in 1967.

Today, Webster University’s main campus is located outside of downtown St. Louis, Missouri. Additional locations are found across most of the U.S. and in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Students also may choose to study online.

U.S. News and World Report consistently ranks Webster University in the best Regional Universities-Midwest category. The publication also declares that the institution’s online programs are among the best in the nation.

Webster University Accreditation Details

The institution is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a status that it has maintained since 1925. Program-specific accreditations include the America Bar Association’s approval of the paralegal and legal studies programs, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education’s approval of the programs at the School of Education and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs’ approval for business and management programs.
