Marywood University was established in 1915 in Pennsylvania by a group of Roman Catholic sisters known as the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The school was originally fashioned as an institution for older girls who wanted to continue their education, and the mother superior of the organization chose the name of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary to distinguish the school from a traditional finishing school for young ladies. The school only enrolled women until 1989 when it started accepting applications from male students. The college would attain university status in 1997.
