About Wright State University
Wright State University is a public university in Fairborn, Ohio, which is a suburb of Dayton. Named for the Wright Brothers who owned a bicycle shop nearby and tested their airplane designs on a local field, it’s also known as WSU and Wright State. Miami University and Ohio State University worked together to establish a regional campus in the Dayton area in 1964 as Dayton was one of the largest cities in the state without a public university. To give the campus more room, Wright Patterson Air Force Base and the United States Air Force donated land to the school. Some of the co-op programs available today are on that base. U.S. News and World Report rank Wright State as the 200th best university in the nation and one of the best in the world. Thanks to a recent expansion of the campus and the addition of online programs, enrollment at WSU now includes more than 13,000 students.
Wright State University Accreditation Details
Wright State has the same regional accreditation that it had years ago and reaffirmed its accreditation in the late 2010s. It holds regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which means that all returning and incoming students can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This also allows students to transfer credits from other schools in Ohio and outside of the state that has regional accreditation. The business and education degree programs are just a few that the university offers that also have accreditation.
Wright State University Application Requirements
With the WSU online application, grad students can easily apply to one of the university’s online graduate degree programs. They need to pay a $40 application fee, which the university drops to $10 for those applying to a certificate program. Students also need to have their former colleges mail official copies of their transcripts. Wright State does not accept scanned copies or faxed records but will accept digital transcripts. Students are responsible for checking with their future programs to find out what other requirements they need to complete. Those programs may ask for three reference letters written on the author’s letterhead. Those who graduated within the last five years can use academic references, but the university asks for professional references from those who graduated more than five years ago.
Many programs have a grade point requirement of 3.0 or higher and ask for a personal statement that shows why the student picked WSU and that field of study. They may need to show proof that they took prerequisite classes too. Wright State will not process an application until it receives all the required information. It can take up to two days for the university to review new documents. Most students receive a notice letter from WSU within four to six weeks.
Tuition and Financial Aid
At WSU, any graduate student taking up to 10.5 credit hours is a part-time student. They pay $660 per credit hour as an Ohio resident and $1,125 per credit hour if they’re not from the state. Full-time graduate students pay between $7,149 and $12,143 each semester based on their home states and can take up to 18 credits. Both the university’s nursing and MBA programs charge a slightly higher rate for students.
Many students need financial aid, which the university can help them get when it receives a completed FAFSA. This helps students qualify for different types of state and federal aid, including grants and subsidized loans. With work-study, they have the choice to work for the university or a local employer and get paid 10 hours of work every week. Students attending Wright State can also get scholarships from the university and grants. While the university also has assistantships available, most are on-campus or with employers around Dayton.
