About Stanford University

Stanford University was established in 1885 by Leland Stanford and his wife Jane. The couple lost their only son in 1884, which prompted the creation of the university which was built in his memory. Stanford University was established in the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe territory. Prior to receiving its current name, Stanford was known as Leland Stanford Junior University. Today, Stanford is legally recognized as such. The university officially opened its doors in October of 1891 and began as an affordable and co-educational facility. The curriculum consisted of liberal arts, technology, and engineering programs. While Stanford University saw minor success in its primary years, an earthquake in 1906 destroyed the progress.

Herbert Hoover, who went on to become a U.S. president assisted the university through its financial hardship after the quake by founding the Hoover Institution Library and Archives. Eventually, this establishment led to the development of the Graduate School of Business. With the university slowly rebuilding its foundations, more professors and leaders joined forces and contributed to the progress.

In 1937, a group of physicists created the first high-frequency vacuum which was a trailblazing development that sparked the innovation of commercial air navigation and satellite communication. By 1939, two of Stanford’s graduate students designed an audio oscillator which was an inexpensive way to measure audio frequencies. The groundbreaking inventions led to the establishment of the Stanford Research Park in 1951, a home for innovators.

In 1959, the Stanford Medical School was introduced to Stanford’s main campus. During the 1950s, the plans for the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory were in the works, and in 1962 it was officially open for applicants. SLAC witnessed the very first website going live on the internet just under 30 years ago. Stanford University continued to hone its advanced and futuristic ideas throughout the decades. Researchers spent the 1970s searching for new ways to cater to and preserve the environment. The years of dense research helped create new ideas and paths for people to participate in environmental conservation through stewardship and personal service. Stanford created more campus residential housing and the Marguerite shuttle service so that students who lived off-campus would not have to use their vehicles as much.

In 1980, the Stanford Humanities Center became the first and largest advanced research center. Students have been able to explore the deeper realms of humanities through history, philosophy. Literature, arts, culture, and other human experiences. Experiential learning has always been integrated into Stanford’s programs and departments.

Today, Stanford University is comprised of 18 interdisciplinary departments that educate over 16,000 students and 1,800 postdoctoral participants. The institution is international and welcomes students from all across the United States and more than 91 countries. Stanford has 900 student-athletes who follow in the footsteps of historical athletes who have seen 128 national titles and 22 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup awards. Each student is guided to greatness by Stanford faculty members who are Nobel Laureates.
