
Online master’s degree programs have become popular in recent years, due to the changing demands of the marketplace, and the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) meets these demands head-on. The school offers a number of online master’s degrees in education. The school also offers some graduate-level certificates online, also in education.
Online Master’s Degrees Offered at University of Houston-Victoria

People who study with UHV online can earn a master of education degree in subjects like principalship, superintendency, organizational leadership, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, literacy studies, ESL/ TESOL and special education. Generally speaking, these programs are about 30 credit hours, although there are fast-track options available for many of the degrees.
About University of Houston-Victoria
Founded in 1973, the University of Houston-Victoria has received a number of nods from the US News and World Report. The news site ranked it 87th-113thin its Regional Universities West category and 56th in its Top Performers in Social Mobility category. It is one of four schools in the University of Houston school system.
Graduates from UHV enjoy comfortable salaries after they graduate, about $50,000 per year on average. The school is selective: It accepts about half of the students who apply. About 4,300 students attend the University of Houston-Victoria. Class sizes have a 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio.
In their spare time, students can blow off steam by playing paintball or Pokemon, hanging on the baseball field or celebrating holidays, like Mardi Gras. The University of Houston-Victoria encourages students to engage with their community by organizing volunteer days and holding symposiums on homelessness and other issues. Students can advance their careers and their personal connections by participating in alumni events.
Dining halls allow students to make friends over dinner or coffee. More adventurous students can make friends around the world by doing a study abroad.
The school sits about 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. It’s comprised of four academic colleges: These are the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education and Human Development, the School of Business Administration and the School of Nursing. In all, the school offers 70 degree programs.
University of Houston-Victoria Accreditation
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges accredits the University of Houston-Victoria. Some individual departments on campus have additional accreditation.
University of Houston-Victoria Application Requirements
University of Houston-Victoria offers would-be students a very streamlined application process. As the school’s application page explains, the process for applying is mostly the same for all students from Freshman to graduate students, with a few minor exceptions.
This section of this post covers the general application requirements. This post will also explain the extra steps some students must take in order to fulfill application requirements.
All applicants must:
- Fill out the University of Houston-Victoria application
- Transcripts from high school or college
- Proof of vaccination for bacterial meningitis: students 22 or younger
- Appropriate degree-level test scores: ACT, SAT, TSI Assessment, GRE, GMAT, MAT
- Residency questionnaire
- Application fee of $25
Here are the additional required materials that some students, depending on their status, must submit to the University of Houston-Victoria: Freshman students must have graduated from their high school in the top 50 percent of their class. They must also have a GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Their SAT scores must be at least 940 or if they took the ACT instead, that score must be an 18.
Transfer students are required to fill out the Pathways Program Application. Visiting undergraduates from another university should submit either their transcripts from their current universities or a proof-of-enrollment letter from their school.
Incoming graduate students are expected to submit all of the materials above, as well as a personal essay and letters of recommendation. These letters should come from people who are practicing in the field of student these students wish to enter.
Former University of Houston-Victoria students who wish to return to the school must reapply. They’ll fill out a new admission application form. They must also send in all of the transcripts from any school they attended besides UHV. The university will charge them a new application fee of $25.
Students are considered former students if they have not been at UHV for 13 consecutive months, have earned a bachelor’s or graduate degree, or are people who have had their coursework interrupted due to non-enrollment.
International students must submit proof of English proficiency. However, the university may offer them provisional admittance for a time.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition rates vary for University of Houston-Victoria students, depending on whether or not they are Texas residents, non-residents or international students. Currently, undergraduate students at the UHV who are Texas residents pay $203 per credit hour. Non-resident undergraduates pay $625.98 per credit hour. Graduate students who have Texas residency pay $352.12 per credit hour, while non-resident graduate students pay $774.12.
These figures do not include fees, room and board and other expenses. However, the school does have a tuition calculator on its website that allows students to input their residency status and other information to get a more exact number.
It should be additionally noted that the University of Houston-Victoria requires Freshmen to live on campus. This will affect how much they pay for room and board: All Freshman must be on a meal plan. Upperclassmen and graduate students who live in student housing are not required to pay for a meal plan.
The university offers students financial aid to help them cover the cost of attending UHV. The school gives more than $32 million in financial aid each year in the form of grants, loans, scholarship and work-study opportunities.
In order to qualify for financial aid, students must fill out the FAFSA and submit it to the school either by October 15th or March 15th to pay for the spring and fall/ summer semesters, respectively. It takes the university about a week to make a determination about students’ financial aid. UHV also makes financial aid counselors available to students who need guidance.
