About Carlow University

Carlow University began as Mount Mercy College, established by the Sisters of Mercy. The Sisters had arrived in Pittsburgh from Carlow, Ireland, on a mission to serve the poor, sick, and uneducated. They purchased a 13-acre site in Oakland and opened Our Lady of Mercy Academy for Kindergarten through 12th-grade students in 1894. Over the years, they also established an orphanage and hospital in the area.

In 1929, Mount Mercy College opened and the first graduation was held in 1933. The school initially served only women, with men not being admitted until 1946. One reason for the change was the establishment of the G.I. Bill which provided a college education to those returning from World War II. In 1969, the school was renamed Carlow College in honor of the Irish town where the original Sisters hailed from. The school gained university status in 2004.

Today, there are over 2,000 students enrolled at Carlow College.
