Upper Iowa University offers four online degree programs for graduate students. One is a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program that requires students to maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0 and take 30 credits of classes. Students can select from one of five emphasis areas, including general business, corporate financial management, and human resource management. They’ll then take five classes from that emphasis area. In the HR management emphasis, majors take Labor and Management Relations, Organizational and Management Theories, and Compensation and Benefits among others.
The university’s Master of Education program features emphasis areas too that let students pick a field that applies to their career goals. Reading, higher education, early childhood education, teaching English as a second language, and gifted and talented education are some of the emphasis areas they can pick. Majors take classes that fit within those areas such as Teaching and Working in a Multicultural Setting, Individual Behavior and Classroom Management, and Methods and Curriculum for Mild/Moderate Disabilities, which are some of the classes that early childhood education majors take. Near the end of any education program, students will take a comprehensive exam and can only graduate if they receive a passing score.
A Master of Public Administration (MPA) is also available online from Upper Iowa University. Students take a research seminar that serves as a capstone and six required courses, including Writing for Public Administrators, Introduction to Program Evaluation, Government and Not for Profit Financial Management and Control, and Graduate Survey of Public Administration. They will take one elective and then pick an emphasis area and take four classes from that area. Emergency management, government administration, and health care management are some of their options. In the emergency management track, majors can take Psychology and Culture of Terrorism, Emergency Management: Planning and Response, and Terrorism and Politics.
The university has a Master of Sport Administration (MSA) online too. It includes emphasis areas in general sports administration and coaching and leadership education. The second track is best for students who want to work as coaches and athletic directors. It features Sport Psychology and Sport Leadership. All MSA students must complete the core curriculum too, which includes Sports Administration, Ethics in Sport, Sport Communication and Marketing, and Sports Law and Contract Negotiation. Online graduate students can earn certificates from Upper Iowa University too, including literacy coaching and student affairs certificates.
About Upper Iowa University
Upper Iowa University is a private university also known as UIU. Established in 1857, the university opened after receiving several donations from the Alexander family. Elizabeth thought that the region needed a school and proposed the idea to her husband, Robert. He donated $10,000 to the school followed by a $5,000 donation from their son. Originally affiliated with the Methodist Church, UIU separated from that religious organization in the late 1920s. The university reported high enrollment rates in the days after both World War II and the Vietnam War as former soldiers used their benefits to attend the school.
One of the biggest changes in the university’s curriculum came in 1972 when it launched an independent study program designed for students who lived far from the campus. This program added more options in the early 1980s as it added campuses and study centers outside of Iowa. UIU launched a similar program in 1999 that allowed students to study in Hong Kong and other international locations. Distance education students can now study online and at 15 locations in states that include Wisconsin and Illinois. Many of these programs use a hybrid format that features online courses too.
Upper Iowa University Accreditation Details
UIU graduate students can get all the government loans that traditional graduate students do. All students can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) because UIU has the regional accreditation that gives students access to that form. It comes from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which is also why it can evaluate and accept credits from incoming students. The university also has accreditation for its nursing programs, including an online program for RN to BSN students.
Upper Iowa University Application Requirements
Prospective students can contact the Enrollment Center at UIU over the phone to ask questions about an online program or to make sure that they meet enrollment requirements. Students need to first register for an application account if they do not have one. They need to list the school they most recently attended, an email address, and a full name. The application will save their information and let them complete the application. It asks them about the program that interests them, how much education they have and if they have any experiences in a related field.
UIU only accepts graduate students who have or will have a bachelor’s degree at the time of enrollment. Some programs require an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher also. Other requirements that they may need to meet include providing their college transcripts, letters of recommendation, a personal statement or essay, and/or standardized test score.
Tuition and Financial Aid
In the online education program, students pay $465 for each credit that they take and a $300 exam fee that is due when they take the comprehensive exam. Students who meet the eligibility requirements for a TEACH grant can get up to $4,000 a year. They must agree to work in a school district with a high need for a set period after they graduate. Online students do not pay any technology or other fees though.
Most of the graduate programs available online from UIU charge a set rate for each class that students take, which includes three credit hours. This ranges from $1,446 in the MSA program to $1,755 in the MBA program. Students in the MPA program pay $1,655 per class. UIU asks distance education students to submit the FAFSA before they register for classes. This is how students qualify for the government’s unsubsidized loans and other loan programs. They have the option of using alternative loans and checking for scholarships too. Military students on active duty status and their families can qualify for tuition grants also. Loans and other types of financial aid are available from the government and Upper Iowa University for all students in an online master’s degree program.
