About the University of Georgia
UGA is one of the oldest universities in the United States. It was founded in 1784 by Lyman Hall, a medical doctor and co-signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Abraham Baldwin, a professor at Yale University and later U.S. Senator. Until the year 1800, UGA existed only in conceptual form. Construction began on the main campus at the turn of the century, and 633 acres were originally allocated for the development of the campus. Over the centuries, UGA has been the primary flagship university of the state of Georgia. It is located in Athens, Ga., and it currently educates over 38,000 students per year. With 3,240 full-time and adjunct members of the faculty, the student-to-professor ratio of classes at UGA is very low. University of Georgia Accreditation Details
UGA is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The SACSCC is a regional accrediting agency that is approved by the U.S. government to accredit universities throughout the South. Regional accreditation for UGA is provided at the institutional level, so all departments and programs are accredited by the SACSCC. Because regional accreditation is the most trusted form of accreditation, students of UGA can be sure that their credits will be transferrable to other accredited colleges.
While UGA is institutionally accredited by the SACSCC, many departments and programs are independently accredited by specialized agencies. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education has accredited all pharmacological programs. The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy has accredited marriage and family therapy programs. The law school at UGA has been accredited by the American Bar Association, and psychology degree programs have been accredited by the American Psychological Association. Various programs at UGA have been accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Council on Education for Public Health, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and many other agencies.
University of Georgia Application Requirements
UGA is considered a highly selective institution, and the acceptance rate of applicants is about 54 percent. The number of full-time undergraduate students enrolled at UGA who graduate within six years is 85 percent. Although admissions to UGA are competitive, students can increase their chances of acceptance by adhering to the application requirements. All applications must be accompanied by official transcripts that indicate the student’s cumulative grade point average, class ranking, and course schedule. Freshman applicants without a high school diploma must provide proof of a GED. Applications for transfer students must include a college transcript with at least 30 hours of course credit. Graduate school applications must include proof of a bachelor’s degree as well as written recommendations from previous professors.
Application requirements are the same for online and traditional programs. Applications must be submitted at least 30 days before the first day of classes. Because UGA is a competitive public university, the typical test scores of admitted students are somewhat higher than average. Typical SAT scores are 570 to 670 for the reading, writing, and math sections of the test. The typical composite ACT score is 26 to 31.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition costs at UGA are about $11,634 per year for Georgia residents and $29,844 for non-residents. Books and living expenses can add another $15,000 per year to the total. With financial aid, most students end up paying around $13,200 per year for tuition, books, and living expenses. Financial aid is available through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid program. FAFSA offers access to public loans and grants to students with financial needs. Additional financial aid opportunities are available to all students through the financial aid office at the University of Georgia.
