Though no longer a teaching college, the university still offers a variety of education and teaching degree programs. Students can become licensed teachers in Nebraska when they graduate and apply for licenses in other states. Since 1989, UNK is part of the University of Nebraska System that allows students to take classes and transfer credits between campuses. It offers online classes through an e-campus. The university’s chemistry, construction management, business, counseling, nursing, and other programs also hold accreditation from organizations such as the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
The University of Nebraska at Kearney Application Requirements
UNK allows students to apply for an online-only program but asks that they sign an agreement that states they will never attend classes on campus. The minimum requirement for enrolling in an online graduate program is a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Most programs ask that students have a degree related to the one they want to earn from UNK and that they submit their college transcripts. The education programs often required a teaching license too. Those applying to an art education program need a degree in studio art, visual art, museum studies or art history.
Many programs ask for two letters of recommendation and will not accept letters written by friends or loved ones. The letters should demonstrate the student’s academic and professional strengths. Also required are a resume and a statement of purpose. The statement of purpose should be between two and four pages in length and list what the student hopes to get out of the program, how they would benefit from an online program and any future goals they have.
Tuition and Financial Aid
At UNK, graduate students enrolled in an e-campus program pay $309 per credit hour as Kansas residents. They also pay $53.25 each credit hour to cover their library, technology, and distance education fees. Though nonresidents pay the same amount of fees at UNK, they pay $494 per credit hour, which increases to $551 per credit hour in the university’s biology program. Students also pay a $4 fee each semester that covers the cost of the university keeping track of their academic records. In all programs available from the College of Education, students pay $309 as a resident and $435 as a nonresident per credit hour.
The most common type of financial aid awarded to graduate students is a loan. Unsubsidized loans come from the government and have a maximum limit of $20,500 per year. Students can take out the maximum amount each year as long as they do not exceed the limit the government offers, which includes their undergraduate loans. Private lenders offer loans for graduate students and offer similar repayment terms. The University of Nebraska at Kearney can help students enrolled in online master’s degree programs find external funding sources that do not require repayment too.
