Case Western Reserve University appears in our ranking of the Top 15 Most Affordable Accelerated Master’s in Biomedical Engineering Online.

Case Western Reserve University in Ohio offers both engineering and social administration programs online for graduate students. The online Master of Science (MS) in Social Administration is similar to a Master of Social Work (MSW) program. Also called the MSSW program, it includes WeWork, which allows students to meet with others studying social work on the web and gives them the chance to meet with others offline too. The traditional track includes 36 credits of classes and 30 months of work. Students in the advanced standing track need more experience but will only take 24 credits in around two years.

The MSSW program includes a concentration for those who want to work with children and families. It features classes such as Family System Interventions, Social Work with Child Abuse and Family Violence, and Child and Family Policy and Service Delivery. Classes in the mental health with adults concentration include Social Work Practice with Adults and Cognitive Behavioral Interventions. The third concentration in community practice for social change includes Nonprofit Revenue Planning and Development and Program and Practice Evaluation. All MSSW students must do offline fieldwork too.

Four of the online master’s programs offered by Case Western Reserve University are in the engineering field. One is an online Master of Engineering, which U.S. News and World Report ranked as one of the best online programs. It includes concentrations in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, systems and control engineering and engineering innovation, management, and leadership. Students take four concentration courses and five required classes before doing a capstone. The university allows majors to do an engineering final project in place of the capstone.

In the biomedical engineering program, students take four core classes and two specialty courses as well as some technical classes. They learn how the body works and the basics of products that doctors and their patients use. The mechanical engineering program focuses more on the development of new tools that use technology and engineering principles. It features eight required classes and up to three technical classes that allow students to study other areas of engineering. The systems and control engineering program include five electives and five required classes. Students do not need a bachelor’s degree in engineering to enroll and can finish the program in 16 months.

About Case Western Reserve University

Case Western Reserve University is a private university that was established in 1826 as Western Reserve College. It was a small college affiliated with a school in Connecticut that offered college programs and served as a prep school. Nicknamed Yale of the West, it became a popular choice for those in Ohio and later students from other states. The Case School of Applied Science opened in 1880 and became the Institute of Technology in 1947. When the two schools merged in the 1960s, they became known as Case Western Reserve University. Also known as CSWRU, it has a large campus close to downtown Cleveland.

Both U.S. News and World Report and ARWU rank CWRU as one of the top 50 colleges in America. Washington Monthly and Forbes rank Case Western Reserve as one of the top 100 colleges in the nation. Campus Pride also ranks the university as one of the best options for LGBTQ students because of the safe environment it offers. Students come to the university from more than 80 countries and all 50 states. CWRU has an enrollment of more than 5,100 undergrads and more than 6,600 students in the graduate, doctoral and professional programs offered both in Cleveland and online.

Case Western Reserve University Accreditation Details

With regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), CWRU can award financial aid packages to online graduate students and others who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The university’s review committee works to ensure that it maintains the proper standards for this accreditation. Programs in dietetics, nursing, law, psychology, dentistry, engineering, and education have accreditation also.

Case Western Reserve University Application Requirements

At CWRU, students with a strong academic record, a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and a transcript that shows the applicant took all required prerequisites will receive full acceptance. The university offers both provisional and conditional acceptance for students who do not meet all requirements of a degree program. Students typically need a bachelor’s degree in the same field or a similar field to the one they want to study at the university. Some departments require official test scores too and will accept a GRE, GMAT, or MAT score. The score must show that the student took the test within the last three to five years.

Though some programs have an application deadline of August first or sometime in the summer, others have deadlines much earlier in the year. Those programs can stop accepting applications by the end of January. Students will create an online application and complete both the personal data and education history sections. They need to upload a personal statement of up to two pages and a writing sample on the application. CWRU requires three letters of recommendation but will accept those submitted online or offline. A $50 fee is due before the university will process an application.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Graduate students in most programs such as Case Western Reserve pay $1,939 per credit hour or $23,262 each semester, which is the cost of taking 12 credits as a full-time student. Students in the engineering programs pay a higher rate that comes to $19,711 per semester for full-time enrollment. Unless they have health insurance, they need to buy coverage from CWRU for another $1,165 every semester. The university charges an $18 activity fee that is due each semester too.

CWRU designed a website called Handshake to help students find job opportunities whether they live close to the campus or outside of the state. It also has a website that lets students search for scholarships and other funding opportunities that cover their costs. Though the university hires grad students as assistants, those positions are only available for on-campus students. Online students should submit the FAFSA though as it will help them qualify for government loans. The Financial Aid Office at Case Western Reserve University offers help for students applying to any of the online graduate degree programs.
