About Angelo State University

Also known as ASU and Angelo State, Angelo State University is a public university named after the city of San Angelo, Texas. Established in 1928 as San Angelo College, it opened a few years after the city voted to build a new college campus. After the county established a community college district, it became a junior college that offered multiple associate degrees and training programs. San Angelo College later gained university status and received regional accreditation, which led to it becoming ASU.

U.S. News and World Report included ASU on a list of the top up and coming colleges in the region. It also appeared as one of the only five public colleges in Texas to land on the best colleges in the nation list issued by The Princeton Review. Both the Air Force and Military Times rank Angelo State as one of the best schools for veterans and enlisted men and women.

Angelo State University Accreditation Details

ASU has the approvals needed to offer classes in the state, nation and tribal reservations. It has primary accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which lets the university offer four different types of degrees. This is the same accreditation that lets the university use federal funds when designing financial aid packages for students who use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Angelo State also has accreditation for its nursing, education and music programs.

Angelo State University Application Requirements

Before applying to an online degree program, future ASU graduate students must apply to the university’s graduate school. This school accepts students who have both a bachelor’s degree and are either a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident. The nursing programs require that students live in Texas because they need to complete their practicums in the state, but other programs accept students who live outside of Texas. Nursing students also need at least one year of nursing experience and a transcript that shows the applicant took an undergraduate class in statistics and received a C or higher in that class. They also need a nursing degree from a college or university that has either nursing or regional accreditation.

Most programs ask that students have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher and that they took related courses in their former programs. Students need to write a statement of up to 800 words to explain why they want to work in that field, their plans after finishing their degrees, how their experiences will help them in the program and how they plan to juggle school and their other commitments. Many programs ask for a current resume and three letters of recommendation too.

Tuition and Financial Aid

At ASU, graduate students pay $50 per credit hour and fees that include technology and library fees. This brings the cost of taking a single credit up to $758.45. As the university charges a set amount of fees, full-time students pay $3,429.80 to take nine credit hours. Students who are not from Texas qualify for the nonresident rate of $472 per credit hour plus their fees. They pay $7,227,80 to take nine credits. All graduate students enrolled in an online program also pay a $50 distance education fee each semester.

Though ASU offers employment for on-campus graduate students, online students qualify for different types of financial aid when they use the FAFSA. They can get federal direct loans and college access loans, but they may qualify for alternative loans as well. The Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) goes to Texas residents enrolled at least half time in a graduate program. Students can access the online scholarship list to view all the available scholarships and to apply for those funds. Angelo State University encourages students in the online master’s degree programs to apply for multiple scholarships to reduce their costs.
