About Drexel University

Drexel University is a private university named after its founder, Anthony J. Drexel. Drexel was a banker who believed that men and women living in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania needed training in certain subjects. He helped open the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry in 1891, which then became the Drexel Institute of Technology in the 1930s and Drexel University in the 1970s. According to the Wall Street Journal, Drexel ranks as the 47th best university in the US. ARWU and US News and World Report also rank Drexel within the top 100 of American colleges on recent lists. Bloomberg Businessweek added the university to its lists of the best undergrad and graduate business programs too. More than 24,000 undergraduate and graduate students attend Drexel University annually.

Drexel University Accreditation Details

Drexel University has accreditation from one of the six organizations in the country that can award regional accreditation: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). This gives graduate students the option of transferring credits to Drexel from another college or university that has the same accreditation. It also gives students the right to get financial aid every year. To get loans and other awards, they need to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the Drexel code.

Drexel University Application Requirements

Drexel accepts graduate students into all programs as long as they have a bachelor’s degree. The university does not require that they have degrees in the same fields they will study but recommends that they take related courses in college to familiarize themselves with the subject matter. Though most programs look for a grade point average of at least 3.0, students can apply with a lower GPA. They need to write a personal statement that notes the work experience they have and any certificates they have in related fields.

In addition to the Drexel application, students need to provide official transcripts from their former schools and two letters of recommendation. Students do not need to use a specific recommendation form but will need to use references who are familiar with their school or professional work. The university requires a resume and an essay too. This essay should be around 500 words and explain why the applicant picked Drexel, any career goals that the student has, and what the applicant wants to experience at the university. Drexel also encourages students to look at the tech requirements for online students to make sure that they can handle their courses.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Most of the graduate programs available online at Drexel University charge students $1,303 per credit hour. Full-time students pay a comprehensive fee of $280 each term too, which drops to $140 per term for part-time students. Students pay extra for their books and supplies, though Drexel gives them access to some online resources for free. With the online accounts they set up when applying, students can go online to make payments or sign up for a payment plan. The university’s installment plan divides the total cost of attendance into equal payments throughout the year.

Graduate scholarships are also available for students in need. Students can get up to $1,200 when they take a Kaplan class to prepare for the GRE. The university will apply the money that students spent on test prep to their total costs. Other scholarships grant graduate students up to $5,000 a year. They can also use any of the student loans that come from the federal government and private lenders such as unsubsidized, PLUS, and alternative loans. Drexel University offers a checklist that shows students applying to the online master’s degree programs what they need to do to get financial aid.
