The University of Mississippi offers nine online master’s degree programs and two education specialist programs. One of the education specialist programs is available in counselor education with an emphasis on play therapy. It features 66 credits of work, including 18 credits of practicums. Students will do practicums in group and family counseling and diagnostic systems and general counseling. The university also offers an online education specialist program in education leadership. It features courses on school and education laws, community leadership, and building human resources.

Online Master’s Degree Programs Available at the University of Mississippi

Through the School of Applied Management, students can get a Master of Hospitality Management. This program includes a 15-credit core of classes such as Advanced Food Service Management, Principles of Research, and Directed Research. Majors also take 21 credits of hospitality management courses, including Advanced Financial Management in Hospitality, Trends and Topics in Hospitality Management, and Advanced Service Quality Management. A similar program is the university’s online Master of Business Administration (MBA) that lets students pick from emphasis areas such as communication skills and strategic thinking. The curriculum includes Organizational Behavior, Managerial Accounting, Supply Chain Management and Management of Technology and Innovation.

An integrated marketing communication graduate program is available for students who online too. Also called the ICM program, it is open to students from around the world. Majors must take six required courses, including one on building brands and another on creating campaigns for companies. The electives in the program allow students to study web marketing, including how to create campaigns and determine the needs of a client and customer base. Other electives include Special Problems in Integrated Marketing Communication, Foundations of Sport, Health Communication and Crisis Communication.

Five online master’s degree programs are available from the School of Education at the University of Mississippi. In the Master of Education in Early Childhood Education, students look at how kids in preschool and similar settings learn, but they also how to work with the parents and loved ones of their students. This school also offers online programs in teaching, leadership, higher education, elementary education and teaching. Though most of the programs are only open to those with a valid teaching license and a bachelor’s degree, the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program will accept students without any teaching experience.

The University of Mississippi is a large public university in Jackson, Mississippi that adopted the nickname Ole Miss over the years. Mississippi granted a charter for the university in 1848 and saw it open four years later. Though just 80 students signed up for classes that year, enrollment would rapidly grow in the coming years as the university grew. Ole Miss went from a campus that held just six buildings to a modern campus with dozens of buildings today. Ole Miss gained more attention when it closed during the Civil War and some of its students enlisted in the Confederate Army. It also received national attention when the first black student in the university’s history earned the right to enroll in the 1960s.

University of Mississippi Accreditation Details

With the regional accreditation that it has, Ole Miss can give financial aid to online graduate students who need help. This accreditation comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Grad students can also use this accreditation if they want to transfer credits into one of the university’s online programs. Some of the other accreditation that Ole Miss holds comes from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE).

University of Mississippi Application Requirements

Students applying to the education specialist programs must already have a graduate degree along with a grade point average of at least 3.0. They need a minimum of three years of teaching or education experience and a teaching license. The resume they submit with the application will show the experience that they have. Ole Miss also asks for an essay or writing sample focused on their experience and how it will help them in the program. Though the university requires two letters of recommendation, it gives students the option of uploading those letters to the application or sending them through the mail. There is a small application fee too.

Most programs ask for official transcripts from the colleges where students earned their undergrad degrees. This includes the MBA program, which also asks for a GMAT or GRE score and will not accept any score that is more than five years old. When using the online application system, students can add the contact information for their two references. Ole Miss will contact those individuals and ask for letters of recommendation. They need to submit a resume that shows they have two years of professional experience or more and a statement of purpose. Many of the Ole Miss online programs have prerequisites that students need to take too.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Ole Miss charges a base tuition rate for students of $363.25 per credit hour for Mississippi residents and $1,041.25 for non-residents. Those taking online classes may pay different rates. MBA students pay $894.50 per credit hour or $2,683.50 for each class that they take. Online programs may limit some of the financial aid that students can get such as assistantships, which are only available for on-campus students. Fellowships only go to resident students too.

The university encourages students to contact the Office of Financial Aid to see what aid they can use and to submit the FAFSA when they apply to an online program. Some departments like the School of Education have scholarships that online students can get. They also qualify for federal loans as long as they did not borrow the maximum amount available during their undergrad years. Students in the online master’s degree programs at the University of Mississippi can use tuition reimbursement plans if their employers offer that option.
