Master of Science  in Health and Physical Education

Fulfilling Certified Adapted P.E. Specialist credentialing, the Master of Science in Health and Physical Education lets Longwood teachers spend one year full-time or two years part-time furthering pedagogical skills for K-12 classes promoting optimal fitness. The 33-credit, CAEP-accredited major overseen by Dr. Kevin Doyle from Hull Hall explores topics like Principles of Coaching, Community Health, and Curriculum Design before an internship in educators’ own schools.

About Longwood University

Longwood University was established pre-Civil War in 1839 by Methodist minister Solomon Lea as the Farmville Female Seminary for classics education. Facing Reconstruction Era trouble, it was saved by Superintendent William Henry Ruffner and renamed the State Female Normal School in 1884. By the 1920s, Joseph Jarman had reshaped it again for four-year university academics. In 1928, it acquired Prince Edward County’s Longwood House, Confederate officer Charles S. Venable’s birthplace. After becoming Longwood College in 1949, it began admitting male students in 1968. Finally, on April 2, 2002, Governor Mark Warner chartered Longwood University for graduate programs. Endowed for $75.9 million, Longwood now educates 5,096 Lancers from 25 states with 100 percent internship participation at its 154-acre Appomattox campus and online. Money magazine noticed Longwood for America’s 480th best investment thanks to the $82,100 average mid-career salary on PayScale. College Factual honored Longwood for the 259th best business, 113th top liberal arts, and 377th best teaching degrees. Within the fifth-best state for careers, Forbes positioned Longwood 462nd overall. The Social Mobility Index recognized Longwood for the 339th best opportunities. Longwood University Accreditation Details

On March 18, 2014, Longwood University underwent an in-depth institutional review by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to certify its Quality Enhancement Plan and reaffirm the Level III accreditation for 10 years under its 26th president, Dr. W. Taylor Reveley IV. Located 459 miles southwest via Interstate 85 in Decatur, this large 11-state Appalachian accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to review Longwood’s 86 baccalaureate and 10 master’s majors. The College of Graduate Studies also keeps these master’s accreditations current:

Longwood University Application Requirements

Logging into Longwood University is classified “moderately difficult” on Peterson’s though 4,475 of the 4,873 Fall 2017 applicants were successful for 91 percent acceptance. Post-grad Lancers joisting for online master’s spots must first complete a regionally accredited baccalaureate. MBA Online cohorts must have taken prerequisite courses in Management, Marketing, Macroeconomics, and Financial Accounting. The Health & Physical Education MS stipulates Virginia K-12 certification with two years of full-time teaching work. All programs seek a minimum cumulative GPA above 2.75 on the 4.0 scale. If less, the College of Graduate Studies requires a 3.5 GPA or better in the first six Longwood credits. Scoring above mean on the Graduate Record Exam would also qualify. Business Administration majors present an average GMAT grade of 454. Waivers are available for second master’s, 7+ years of experience, and certifications like Six Sigma. International students from non-English countries must always score above 550 on the TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS exam though.

Longwood University typically has rolling online master’s admission, but the final deadlines are June 30th for Fall, November 15th for Spring, and March 31st for Summer. Interested students use ApplyWeb to submit the $50 Graduate School Application online. Required attachments include the 500-word personal essay, two recommendations, GRE/GMAT score or waiver, background check, teaching license, Praxis Core Academics for Educators score, and I-20 forms. Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2018-19, Longwood University is charging on-campus or hybrid Virginia graduates $499 per credit. Online courses are discounted to $396 per credit for Old Dominion residents. MBA classes are the exception with a $210 fee to $606 per credit. Out-of-state traditional and hybrid master’s students pay $1,154 per credit. Studying online shaves non-resident tuition to $1,031 per credit. Again, the Online MBA adds the $210 fee for $1,241 per credit outside Virginia. Therefore, the Master of Business Administration bills $21,816 to $44,676 total. Earning the Health and Physical Education MS Online sets teachers back $13,068 to $34,023 overall.

According to the NCES College Navigator, the Office of Financial Aid in Brock Hall disburses $19.11 million yearly for 49 percent of full-time Longwood Lancers to receive assistance averaging $8,586. Master’s funds include the Graduate Studies Operating Scholarship, Class of 1945 Scholarship, Jason Foundation Fellowship, Verna Mae Barr Scholarship, Leggette Andressen Scholarship, Class of 1960 Scholarship for Excellence, Geist-Jackson Scholarship, Jane Royall Phlegar Scholarship, and Martha Walton High Scholarship. The SNVC Institute for Leadership and Innovation has a July 24th deadline for its $1,000 Longwood MBA award. Graduate assistantships pay for 150 to 300 hours per semester plus stipends. FAFSA forms coded 003719 would judge eligibility for Federal Direct Unsubsidized and Grad Plus loans. Past borrowing could be excused with Virginia’s Tobacco Region Loan Forgiveness Program. Some receive the $4,000 TEACH Grant to cover online education courses too.
