About Longwood University

Longwood University was established pre-Civil War in 1839 by Methodist minister Solomon Lea as the Farmville Female Seminary for classics education. Facing Reconstruction Era trouble, it was saved by Superintendent William Henry Ruffner and renamed the State Female Normal School in 1884. By the 1920s, Joseph Jarman had reshaped it again for four-year university academics. In 1928, it acquired Prince Edward County’s Longwood House, Confederate officer Charles S. Venable’s birthplace. Longwood University Accreditation Details

On March 18, 2014, Longwood University underwent an in-depth institutional review by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to certify its Quality Enhancement Plan and reaffirm the Level III accreditation for 10 years under its 26th president, Dr. W. Taylor Reveley IV. Located 459 miles southwest via Interstate 85 in Decatur, this large 11-state Appalachian accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to review Longwood’s 86 baccalaureate and 10 master’s majors.
