Online Master’s Degree Programs at the Savannah College of Art and Design

The Savannah College of Art and Design offers online master’s degree programs in more than 10 subjects, most of which help students earn a Master of Arts (MA). In the MA in Preservation Design, students study historic architecture. They learn how to use preservation techniques to save those structures and the restoration methods that professionals use. The program includes classes on interior and exterior design standards and government funding options too. Practicing Preservation in a Global Context, Defining Place: Research and Survey, and Style and Elegance in the Classical Tradition are all classes in the program. Students will either take an advance elective, work on a collaborative project or do an internship at the end of the program.
One of the college’s Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) programs includes a major in writing. Students can take up to four advanced electives or take fewer electives and do a collaborative project that allows them to work with others on a story or book idea. The program features two graduate internships too in which students work with book publishers or editors. Some of the classes that they must take include Contemporary Art, Analysis of Creative Nonfiction, History of Rhetoric, Public and Media Relations Writing and Strategy, and Mastery of Style, Voice, and Subject.
In 2017, the college’s MA in Luxury and Fashion Management ranked as the best fashion management program in the world by The Business of Fashion. The Savannah College of Art and Design now offers this as an online program that students can complete without living in Georgia. It includes an internship option for students and allows them to take an advanced elective or do a group project in place of that internship. Internships are available at fashion and design centers around the world. Global Distribution for Luxury Brands, Supply Chain Management in the Global Marketplace, Fashion Promotion, and Financial Reporting and Analysis are some of the classes in the fashion management program.
The college offers an MA in Creative Business Leadership too, which looks at how leaders can work in art and design companies. From Agoras to Digital Markets: Fundamentals of Business Design is a required class that looks at how business markets changed over the years and what individuals need to do to stay on top of current trends. Funding Creative Business: Financial Strategies for Sustained Success is another required class that helps students find methods to fund the business ideas that they have. The college also offers an MFA in Animation online that includes Animation Aesthetics and Practice, Drawing in Motion, Art Criticism, and Media Theory and Application.
About the Savannah College of Art and Design
Also known as SCAD, the Savannah College of Art and Design is a private art and design college in Savannah, Georgia. The main campus has a strong reputation due to the revitalization efforts that it launched over the years to preserve and restore nearby historic structures. Some of those buildings are now part of the main campus. Founded in 1978, the college originally offered only eight programs. During the early 1980s, enrollment at the college included just 500 students. SCAD now has an enrollment of more than 11,000 full-time and part-time students. The college opened a second campus in Atlanta to help local students and now offers classes on campuses in Lacoste and Hong Kong. Some of the events that SCAD holds every year include the Sidewalk Arts Festival and the Savannah Film Festival, both of which allow current students and alumni to show their work.
Savannah College of Art and Design Accreditation Details
SCAD has regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which is why it can offer residential and online degree programs. This is the same accreditation that gives students the choice of using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if they need any type of financial aid too. The college also has accreditation from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
Savannah College of Art and Design Application Requirements
Graduate students applying to the residential and online master’s programs at SCAD need to complete the same steps. The college asks that they set up accounts with the application portal and apply online. They can then use those accounts to log into the MyAdmission portal on the website and submit their official documents. The SCAD application asks for background information on each applicant, including where they went to college, the degrees they hold, their undergraduate grades, and where they live.
SCAD students need a bachelor’s degree and should have a degree that relates to the graduate programs they want to study. Though they need to submit two letters of recommendation, the college accepts letters from employers and supervisors as well as professors. Other requirements include a portfolio, resume and statement of purpose that explains why they picked that program at SCAD. Some programs may require that students submit an official GRE score and/or interview with a member of the department’s faculty.
Tuition and Financial Aid
All the eLearning programs available from SCAD charge the same rates that students on the Atlanta and Savannah campuses pay. This comes to $38,475 every year for full-time enrollment. Students pay $4,275 to take a single five-credit hour class, $8,550 if they take two classes in a term, and $12,825 if they take three classes each semester. The college charges a $50 application fee and has a $500 enrollment deposit that students need to pay to start classes. Graduate students have the option of studying on the Hong Kong campuses or taking classes on the Lacoste campus, but those campuses charge different rates.
SCAD online graduate students can qualify for financial aid from the college and the government if they submit the FAFSA. Students need to file the FAFSA by the beginning of March and can use this form as early as October. Around 80 percent of incoming students receive some of the college’s scholarships, which go to those who demonstrate either more need or merit. Unsubsidized loans are available from the government for online students too.
