Sul Ross State University originated on April 14, 1914, when Governor James E. Ferguson appropriated $200,000 to build the Alpine Summer Normal School. Three years later, the 35th Legislature renamed the teachers’ college for Texas A&M president Lawrence Sullivan Ross. On April 3, 2018, Sul Ross State University hosted a reaffirmation committee from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to assess the Level III standards and renew 10-year accreditation under its 12th president, Dr. William L. Kibler. Based 1,282 miles east via Interstate 20 in Decatur, this expansive 11-state Border Region accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) for checking instructional practices in SRSU’s 59 baccalaureates, 32 master’s, and eight certificate options. In June 2017, Sul Ross State received accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
