About Johns Hopkins University

Johns Hopkins University is a private university that ranks as one of the top colleges in the world. Johns Hopkins donated $7 million to build a new university, which is equivalent to more than $140 million today. His donation in 1873 led to the establishment of the university three years later. The university accepted an African American student in honor of Hopkins who was an abolitionist. It also earned national attention after admitting women into its nursing program in the late 19th century and other programs in the early 20th century. Located in Baltimore, Maryland, the university now has two campuses in the city as well as campuses in Washington DC, Homewood, and Laurel. U.S. News and World Report ranks the university as the 10th best university in the United States and the 12th best college in the world. Also known as JHU, it appears on similar lists from Washington Monthly and Forbes.

Johns Hopkins University Accreditation Details

JHU received regional accreditation in 1921 from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and saw its accreditation renewed every decade since then by the organization. This is why graduate students who want to borrow money can get loans when they file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Maryland Higher Education Commission also authorized the university to operate in the state. Many of the degree programs available from Johns Hopkins University have specialty accreditation from other organizations, including some of the online options.

Johns Hopkins University Application Requirements

Though most of the JHU online master’s degree programs will accept students who have a bachelor’s degree, the MEHP program only accepts those with an advanced college degree. Students also need a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a typical 4.0 scale, which is a requirement that other programs also have. The School of Education and other schools and departments have online applications that students can use. They need to make sure that they complete each section and include as much information as possible. JHU requires that prospective students pay an $80 application fee too.

Other requirements include a CV or resume and official transcripts from all colleges that the applicant attended. The resume must contain a list of skills that the student has in the program and any professional or volunteer experiences that will help them at the university. JHU will accept a personal essay or a letter of intent and asks that the document list all the reasons the student have for choosing the university and a specific program. Most of the online graduate programs ask for two letters of recommendation too. Once the admissions board reviews the student’s application, it will schedule a phone interview to make sure that the applicant is a good fit.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Online graduate students attending JHU pay a minimum of $793 per credit hour. The university estimates that they’ll pay an average of $65 per credit hour for their books and more than $7,000 a semester for their room and board. Students qualify for financial aid through specific organizations and programs. Before they can get any financial aid, they will need to submit the FAFSA.

Education majors who receive help through an AmeriCorps program can get extra help to pay for JHU. The university offers several payment plans that help students make small payments on their costs each term. A separate program is available for JHU employees who want to take classes, which will cover all of their tuition costs. Scholarships from JHU award students between $500 ad $1,500 every year. Students need to apply to the university, submit the FAFSA and complete the Endowed Scholarship Application Form to qualify for the university’s scholarships. They also have the option of using loans, including those that are available for private lenders and the federal government. Johns Hopkins University offers financial aid packages that cover most of the costs for students applying to its online master’s degree programs.
