About Hofstra University

Hofstra University began in 1935 as an extension of New York University. An extension of the university had been discussed for many years, proposed by Hempstead resident, Truesdell Peck Calkins. After the death of William S. Hofstra, a lumber entrepreneur, his second wife, Kate Mason Hofstra provided the bulk of their property and estate to be used for charitable purposes as long as it was named after her husband. Two friends, Howard Brower and James Barnard were appointed trustees of the estate when Kate Hofstra died in 1933. Calkins mentioned to Brower that he had been looking for a location for an extension of NYU and the three men felt this would be an appropriate use for the Hofstra estate.

From the beginning, the school was co-educational, offering day and evening classes to students who commuted to campus. In 1937, the name of the school was officially changed to Hofstra College and separated from NYU in 1939. On March 1, 1963, Hofstra became New York’s first private university. It was also the first institute of higher learning to create an architecturally barrier-free campus, encouraging students of all abilities to attend. Hofstra is considered a pioneer in higher education ADA compliance.

Today, there are over 10,800 students attending Hofstra University. The school has been ranked highly by US News & World Report, Forbes, and the Princeton Review.

Hofstra University Application Requirements

Applicants to the Master of Laws program a Hofstra University must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university as well as a Bachelor of Laws or J.D. degree. Hofstra University Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for online graduate degree programs at Hofstra University is $1,398 per credit hour. Financial aid is available and students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify.

Financial aid may be offered in the form of grants, including the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) grant for those who intend to teach in high-needs fields or in schools that serve low-income families. A service obligation is required or the grant converts to a loan. Graduate students may also be offered federal student loans to cover the cost of tuition.
