About Sacred Heart University
Located in Fairfield, Connecticut, Sacred Heart University is a private college affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Founded in 1963 by members of the Diocese of Bridgeport, the school has grown to become the second-largest school affiliated with the church in New England and is only behind Boston College in overall size. While enrolled at the university, students may study abroad at international campuses in Luxembourg and Ireland. The suburban campus covers more than 300 acres in Fairfield, and the school’s business programs have landed on the “Best Business Schools 2017” list from The Princeton Review.
The school’s official colors are red and white, and the school’s athletic teams participate in NCAA Division I games as the Pioneers. The school has experienced significant growth in recent years and has reached a size of more than 5,400 undergraduates and 3,100 postgraduates. The first class of students attending Sacred Heart University numbered only 173. The faculty numbered just nine when the school opened and had grown to more than 500 by 2017. In 2009, the school opened a new chapel, and in 2012 the university opened a new building designed as a common area for students.
Sacred Heart University Accreditation Details
The New England Association of Schools and Colleges has given regional accreditation to Sacred Heart University. The NEASC is one of a half-dozen associations around the country that offer accreditation to universities and colleges in the United States. Some of the programs offered at the college are accredited by additional organizations. For example, the Connecticut State Department of Education has accredited the programs in elementary and secondary teacher certification. The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education has accredited the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, and the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education has accredited the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. The Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and the Bachelor of Science in Social Work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
Sacred Heart University Application Requirements
The application for admission to Sacred Heart University requires an application fee of $50, the official application, submission of high school transcripts, a letter of recommendation, and standardized test scores from the ACT or SAT. Students who elect to enroll in the Early Decision program must also submit the Early Decision contract. Deadlines for application include December 15th for the Early Action Deadline and February 15th for the Regular Decision Priority Deadline. Students who enroll in the university must submit their deposit for housing by May 1st in the year they wish to attend school. The graduate programs at Sacred Heart University often have unique admissions requirements depending on the program chosen. For example, the Master of Science in Athletic Training requires that students have a bachelor’s degree, an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0, and completion of several prerequisite courses.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Full-time tuition for undergraduate students at Sacred Heart University is $20,575 per semester. Students will also pay an athletic & recreation fee of $135 per semester and a health insurance fee of $2,161 per semester. The audit fee is $945 per class, and students who choose to enroll in more than 18 credits will pay an overload rate of $1,130 per credit. Additional fees for various programs and laboratories include an Exercise Science fee of $20 per course, a Nursing program fee of $625 per semester, and a Physics fee of $195 per course. Room and board fees are $5,250 per semester and the meal plan varies from $1,040 to $2,870 per semester. Students who commute to school and don’t live on campus may also pay for commuter meal plans that range from $155 to $515 per semester.
