Online Master’s Degree Programs Available at the University of Maryland-Baltimore

The University of Maryland-Baltimore offers five online master’s degree programs through its graduate school, which are open to students with an interest in both science and medicine. One option is a Master of Science in Palliative Care, which is also available as an online graduate certificate program. During both the fall and spring semesters, students take two eight-week classes, but they’ll take another eight-week class in the summer session. Their courses include Symptom Management in Advanced Illness, Communication and Health Care Decision Making, and Principles and Practice of Hospice and Palliative Care.
In the Master of Science in Health Science program, students take a minimum of 30 credits of courses. Those most students graduate within 18 months, the university gives them up to three years to finish their studies. This program includes a physician assistant concentration that students can pick too. It prepares students for working as physician assistants at health care facilities across the state. Students take Foundations of PA Practice, Applied Medical Sciences, Clinical Medicine, and Emergency Medicine among other classes. They will also do nine clerkships over three semesters and have the option of working in facilities such as pediatric clinics and urgent care centers.
One of the more popular graduate programs available online from the University of Maryland-Baltimore is in regulatory science. This program looks at how the FDA and other government agencies regulate the foods, drinks, and other products that people consume. Regulated Products in the Marketplace and Clinical Research are among the program’s required classes. Students can also earn a certificate in regulatory science online, which includes only two classes. The full degree program is available without a thesis requirement and is designed for part-time students.
About the University of Maryland-Baltimore
The University of Maryland-Baltimore is a public university in Baltimore, Maryland. It also uses the nicknames UMB and Maryland. Established in 1807, it is one of the largest campuses in the UM system. Before becoming a university, the campus served as the Maryland College of Medicine, which offered several medical training programs. It received a charter a few years later to run as the University of Maryland, which led to the campus adding new degree programs and choices for students who didn’t want to study medicine. Medicine is still a popular study path for many students as UMB is home to the School of Medicine and a School of Dentistry. The campus also has a School of Law as well as a Graduate School, which is responsible for all the available graduate degree and certificate programs, including those that take place online.
Known as the University of Maryland Graduate School, Baltimore, this division of the university opened in 1985. It now offers programs previously only available on the university’s separate campus in Baltimore. There are more than 20-degree programs available online in fields such as social work, toxicology, biology, clinical research, and life science. Even more degree programs are available online, though most programs are in medicine or medical research. More than 5,700 graduate and post-graduate students work on their certificates and degrees through UMB every year. The main campus in the UM system ranks on both a national and global level today.
University of Maryland-Baltimore Accreditation Details
UMB does a self-study to make sure that it maintains the standards needed for regional accreditation, which comes from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). It does that study once every decade when the accreditation comes up for renewal. Students who wish to use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can get federal financial aid through that form due to this accreditation. University of Maryland-Baltimore Application Requirements
To make sure that incoming students can handle the academic demands of an online program, Maryland has minimum standards that they must meet. Students need a grade point average of at least 3.0 in a bachelor’s program and a completed bachelor’s degree. July 15 is the final deadline for those applying to an online program for the fall semester. If a student applies after this deadline, UMB will not look at their application until the next application phase opens.
Incoming graduate students should submit the Maryland Graduate School application. They also need to provide three letters of recommendation, a resume, and a goals statement. They can view instructions on how to write that statement before they send one to the correct email address. UMB asks that students submit their letters of recommendation and resumes to the same address.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Graduate students in the palliative care program pay $631.70 per credit hour as a resident of the state and $792.70 per credit hour as a nonresident. Students also pay a $10 per credit hour technology fee and $36.50 in other fees each semester. Most of the UMB graduate programs charge the same rate.
The health science program charges tuition rates of $710.70 to $970.70 per credit hour based on whether students are in-state residents or nonresidents. Those who enroll in the PA assistant track will pay up to $100 to get their certificates in the first year and up to $800 to get other certificates in the second year. The university offers a discounted rate for students who live in Baltimore County of $353.56 per credit hour, which applies to those in the online program too.
UMB awards more than $130 million in institutional aid each year, which is money that comes from the university. That aid goes to online students who completed the FAFSA. A small number of grants are available from UMB, and online students can qualify for scholarships too. Most students will use one of the unsubsidized loans that come from the federal government, which also offers PLUS loans. Students have the choice of looking at and using private or alternative loans too. To qualify for financial aid at the University of Maryland-Baltimore, students must apply to one of the online master’s degree programs and submit the FAFSA.
