About Grand Canyon University

The Southern Baptist Church founded Grand Canyon College in 1949 in an abandoned armory building in Prescott, Arizona. Two years later, the school relocated to Phoenix where it has grown into a premier Christian university.

The school’s enrollment grew over the years, but, by the early 2000s, dwindling financial support began to have an impact on academics and operations. In an effort to remain solvent, the school transitioned out of non-profit status and implemented a new business practice in 2004. The curriculum was enhanced and additional options were added to address the needs of working professionals.

Since that time, the school has grown significantly and the campus is undergoing a $200 million renovation and expansion. Grand Canyon University has continued offering programs based on the Christian faith. All programs integrate Christian beliefs into their curriculum. On-campus students attend optional chapel services and Bible studies. Both on-campus and online students may participate in international mission trips and outreach ministries. Although the school focuses on Christian belief, students of all denominations are welcome to attend.

During mission trips, which exceed 10 each year, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in another culture, whether they spend spring break in Mexico or Haiti making a difference for those who need help. Students have also spent summers in Thailand and Kenya, feeding the hungry and ministering to those who are less fortunate.
