About Southern Utah University
Southern Utah University originated in September 1897 when the State Legislature opened the Branch Normal School in Ward Hall on Cedar City’s Main Street for an inaugural class of 161. In 1913, Roy F. Homer oversaw the transition from teacher training to the Branch Agricultural College. During H. Wayne Driggs’ 1940s tenure, it developed the first four-year bachelor’s and partnered with Zion National Park. By 1951, it had doubled in size, developed today’s 129-acre Iron County campus, and become the College of Southern Utah. On February 14, 1990, Governor Norman Bangerter again changed the name to Southern Utah University for growing master’s options. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2017-18, Southern Utah University charged traditional Utah graduates full-time average tuition of $7,462 and fees of $758 annually. Non-residents paid $23,432 per year plus $758 in fees for master’s campus courses. However, the Graduate Studies Division has wide-ranging online prices that bill in-state and out-of-state students equally. The Online Master of Education costs $272 per credit or $2,783 each nine-credit semester. Online MBA and MAcc cohorts afford $423 per credit, which equals $4,183 by term. The M.A. in Professional Communication requires $298 for each credit or $3,179 per semester full-time. Distance MSW education is $2,041 per course with the University of Utah. All other SUU online masters are $363 per credit and $3,646 by semester.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Financial Aid Office in Sharwan Smith Center disburses $42.14 million combined for 64 percent of SUU Thunderbirds to claim offers averaging $7,828. Institutional funds include the Ernest Hungate Burgess Scholarship, Bennion Service Scholarship, Clara Creer & Perry Driggs Scholarship, Mecham Family Scholarship, Mary Lou Pendleton Jolley Scholarship, Melling Dover Pioneer Scholarship, Michael Keith Noel Memorial Scholarship, Rodney R. Hawes Scholarship, and Valerie P. Imlay Scholarship. The Graduate Studies Division presents the 100% Differential Waiver to non-residents with minimum 3.2 GPAs. The Dixie & Anne Leavitt Scholarship has a February 1st deadline for covering 75 percent of housing rent. Both the M.A. in Arts Administration and M.S. in Sports Conditioning & Performance qualify for the Western Regional Graduate Program. FAFSA applications coded 003678 determine Federal Direct Unsubsidized and Graduate Plus loan amounts. Select programs like the Master of Public Administration and Master of Accountancy offer 20-hour assistantships. Southern Utah suggests applying for the Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship worth up to $75,000 for outstanding GPAs over 3.5 too.
